Entering grammar not as one enters a textbook, but as one enters a science of language built twelve centuries ago.

Course objectives

  • Understand the architecture of the Kitāb and the logic of its chapters.
  • Handle the fundamental categories: ʿamal, iʿrāb, taqdīr, qiyās.
  • Follow the transmission of the text from Basra to the schools of the Maghreb.
  • Analyse verses of poetry and of the Qurʾān according to the grammarians' method.

Syllabus

I. Before Sībawayh

The beginnings of reflection on language: Qurʾānic reading, ancient poetry, the first categories.

II. The architecture of the Kitāb

A book with no introduction and no declared plan: understanding the implicit order of a masterpiece.

III. Maghrebi transmission

How the Kitāb travels, is commented upon and is taught in Kairouan, Cordoba and Fez.

IV. Analysis workshops

Methodical application to short texts: one passage fully analysed each session.
